Areola Reduction

Areola reduction surgery is a procedure designed to reduce the size of enlarged or stretched areolae, creating a more balanced and proportionate appearance of the breasts. The areola is the darker pigmented skin surrounding the nipple and can become enlarged due to genetics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations or ageing.

Many patients choose areola reduction to improve breast proportions, increase confidence in their appearance and achieve a more aesthetically pleasing result. The procedure can be performed on its own or combined with other breast procedures such as breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast uplift (mastopexy) or gynaecomastia surgery.

Frequenty Asked Questions

Am I suitable for areola reduction surgery?

You may be suitable if you are unhappy with the size or shape of your areolae, are in good general health and have realistic expectations about the outcome of surgery. A consultation with Mr Sawyer will help determine whether the procedure is right for you.

Why do areolae become enlarged?

Large areolae can occur naturally due to genetics but may also develop following pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, hormonal changes or the natural ageing process.

Can areola reduction be combined with other breast procedures?

Yes. Areola reduction is commonly combined with breast uplift (mastopexy), breast reduction, breast augmentation and breast implant exchange procedures to improve overall breast shape and balance.

What happens during the procedure?

The surgery involves removing a ring of excess pigmented skin from around the areola and then carefully closing the incision to create a smaller, more proportionate areola. Every effort is made to achieve a natural shape and minimise visible scarring.

Will there be visible scars?

A scar will be present around the edge of the areola where the skin colour naturally changes. This location helps to camouflage the scar, and it usually fades significantly over time.

Will the procedure affect nipple sensation?

Most patients retain normal nipple sensation following surgery. However, temporary changes in sensation can occur during healing and, in rare cases, may be permanent.

Can I breastfeed after areola reduction surgery?

Many patients retain the ability to breastfeed after surgery. However, as with any breast procedure, there is a small risk that breastfeeding capability may be affected.

What is recovery like after areola reduction surgery?

Most patients experience mild swelling, bruising and discomfort during the first few days. Many return to work within one to two weeks and can gradually resume exercise after four to six weeks.

Will the results be permanent?

The results are generally long-lasting. However, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations and ageing can affect breast appearance over time and may influence the size of the areolae in the future.

Adam Sawyer is from now on the one and one surgeon I will ever want. Him and his team are incredible. I've never had selective surgery before so wasn't sure what to expect but Adam was a dream, the process was made so much easier than I expected it to be and during surgery (local anaesthetic) we honestly had the best time! My results are incredible and my confidence is amazing now thanks to him

I have recently had surgery with Mr Sawyer and I would highly recommend him to anyone. When I was selecting a surgeon, it was first based on someone I could access local to where I live and then research of their experience in their field, qualifications and of course, positive reviews!!! As most of us do, I took a while to get to the point of progressing to contacting the team. And whilst speaking to others I actually found two ladies that have had the exact surgery I wanted, with him!! The ladies were also very positive about their surgery by Mr Sawyer. He is very personable and knowledgeable. You can just 'tell' you'll be cared for and in good hands! The consultations and aftercare are in my opinion, spot on. My results are still in the early days of healing, (6 weeks post op) and I'm already thrilled.
